Boondocking near Peoria, AZ
It’s a little noisy this morning out here on the BLM land 27 miles from where I’m working at the Mariner/Padre Spring Training Complex. However, the scenery is spectacular with a wide variety of cacti on the horizon and the sunsets are magnificent. We’re so far out from the lights of the cities here in the desert that the stars seem to jump out at you…a wonderful ski view on a clear night!
For me, this site has worked out perfectly. There are vault toilets and as long as my water holds out for showers, this is where I plan on being until Spring Training is over on the 24th of this month. The other boondocking that I’ve now done in the area is the Desert Diamond Casino in Glendale that is only 7 miles from the Training Complex. They allow to stay in the parking lot for a week at a time. Here, we’re not supposed to stay longer than 14 days but there doesn’t seem to be anyone checking nor, I might add, cleaning the toilets.
Some of the cactuses that I can see from my window are the very large Saguaros, the Cylindropuntias, the Teddy-bear cholla, the Southwest barrel, the Bunny ears cactus, and the jumping Cholla. It has taken me a while to recognize each of these but I’m getting there! Because there has been so much rain this year, the low-lying flowers have also been in bloom. I’m gaining a better understanding of what a beautiful place the Southwestern Desert really is.
